Sowing our first seeds!

On a wonderfully warm and sunny Valentine’s Day, Jess and volunteers from the Arc gathered in the hoop house to plant our first seeds of the season: scallions!  

Jess loves scallions, also known as green onions, because they are harbingers of spring, sending up fragrant tender shoots when most other plants are still hunkered down in winter dormancy.  

Aside from being rich in Vitamin K, delicious in scallion pancakes, scrambled eggs, chicken soup, and 10,000 other dishes, I have just learned that they play a role in certain Sephardic Passover traditions.  Seder guests are invited to whip each other with scallions, evoking the cruel lashes of Pharaoh, all the while singing Dayenu.  I am definitely bringing some green onions to this year’s seder…
